IBM iSeries Power 5 Server

IBM System i5 520

The 9406 1.5/1.65GHz model 520 is a 1-way or 2-way system based on IBM POWER5 technology. The 1.9GHz model 520 is a 1-way or 1/2-way system based on IBM POWER5+ technology. Each 520 system unit has eight memory slots, six PCI-X slots, eight disk slots (four enabled), one half-high slot for removable media, and two slimline slots for DVD drives. Optionally, the other four disk slots can be enabled in the system unit.

Each 520 system unit has two 1Gbps/100Mbps/10Mbps Ethernet LAN ports, two SPCN ports, two serial ports, two HMC, and two USB ports. The 1.5/1.65GHz 520 has two HSL-2/RIO-G ports (for one HSL/RIO loop) where this is an optional feature for the 1.9GHz 520.

IBM i5/OS V5R3 and V5R4, the next generations of OS/400 operating system, supports the use of all of the above hardware elements except one slimline slot, two serial ports, and two USB ports. These components are reserved for other operating systems running on the 520.

Integrated into the 520 system unit is a non-RAID disk, DVD, and tape controller. Neither this integrated controller nor the integrated Ethernet adapter, which drives the two Ethernet LAN ports, uses any of the six PCI-X slots. The non-RAID disk controller can be upgraded to a controller with RAID-5 capability and write cache and still requires no PCI-X slot. A base IOP and a base two-line WAN adapter are included at no charge in the 1.5/1.65GHz model 520. These cards use two of the six PCI-X slots. The 1.9GHz model 520 provides a base one-line WAN adapter which can be used for communication with IBM Electronic Customer Service(ECS)with no IOP or a base two-line WAN adapter if an IOP is added to the configuration. A base IOP is not included with the 1.9GHz model 520.

The 520 is offered as either a deskside tower or as a four EIA/U rack- mounted unit for a standard 19-inch rack. I/O towers/drawers may be attached to the model 520 using the HSL loop (also called a RIO loop) to provide additional PCI slots, disk slots, other I/O. The HSL/RIO loop also connects to other iSeries and xSeries servers.

Model 520 supports the 9944 model 100 thin console. Designed to support the operator console in an i5/OS environment, the thin console is a dedicated console for systems with a single i5/OS partition. The console has a 5250 user interface; in addition, it does not require an IOP or IOA, which saves PCI slots.

The model 520 supports hot-plug disk slots, hot-plug PCI-X slots, and redundant hot-plug cooling fans. An optional redundant hot-plug power supply is available.

The 520 offers outstanding configurability with base features and a large selection of optional features. The minimum functional system consists of the base system unit, base features, and selected priced features.
