Backward compatibility across LTO generations enables media reuse and cost-effective upgrades.

    Compatibilities

    IBM tape libraries are compatible with IBM Power Systems (iSeries/IBM i, pSeries/AIX), Linux distributions (Red Hat Enterprise Linux, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server, Ubuntu), and open-system x86 environments. They support SAS (6/12 Gb/s) and Fibre Channel (8 Gb+) attachments, integration with IBM TS series drives, and tape management software ecosystems. Backward read/write compatibility follows LTO standards (newer generations read two back, write one back). Systems enable seamless use in backup, archive, and hybrid cloud setups with upgrade paths for future LTO generations.
