The IBM 3580-L23 is an external, standalone LTO-2 Ultrium tape drive from the IBM TotalStorage family, incorporating the Linear Tape-Open (LTO) Ultrium 2 technology. It features a full-height tabletop enclosure with Ultra160 Low Voltage Differential (LVD) SCSI interface for broad connectivity. The drive writes and reads LTO Ultrium 2 cartridges at up to 35 MB/sec native (70 MB/sec compressed), more than doubling LTO-1 performance. It also reads and writes LTO Ultrium 1 cartridges at original capacities with improved speeds up to 20 MB/sec native (40 MB/sec compressed). Key enhancements include digital speed matching, power management, channel calibration, larger 64 MB internal buffer, and faster cartridge handling.
